League Match Report:

I am sorry about the delay this week in getting the match report to you but along with Ben Kavenagh, we attended the Kangaroo island Mail medal count on the weekend.

It was won by Nathan Trethewey, with David Westbrook second.

Both players are from Parndana and it was good to catch up with David, who I had coached at the Eagles.

It was also good to see how the competition is run as well as enjoy the feel of how football is such a large part of the community on the island.

It would also be good to see the talent from KI start to represent themselves more at our club.

Hopefully we conveyed how important it is for juniors to improve themselves at the SANFL level and how we can give those that really want to a chance to better themselves at South Adelaide.

The last game of the season did offer us a chance to get something out of the season but we had another of those poor periods in the second quarter which allowed West to gain a significant advantage at half time.

I thought the players kept at it but as has been the case a bit we just couldn’t match it in the finishing department.

The game saw us have a large lot of turnovers, with our end total of 54 by far and away the largest amount we have had this year.

There can be many reasons for this and poor use is certainly one of them which still needs to be addressed but I was impressed by the pressure that West applied throughout the game.

West also displayed good skills too i felt and from an outsiders observations they have improved in all departments since the early times we played them.

It does highlight how good the competition is when the 6th team on the ladder can play with such quality and it shows us we have much to do to be right up there with the best.

As mentioned we did keep going and had the same amount of scoring shots in the second half.

A further indication of how important finishing is, was the fact that although we had the same amount of shots we were outscored by 8 points in the second half.

Once again Nick Liddle played with great commitment.

He not only had the most possessions but also had 13 tackles which just indicates how much of the complete player he is becoming.

His finishing was also good, so he finished his season off very well.

It was good to see James Turner get a chance and play the way people have indicated he is capable of.

It was good to see him take this form into the pre season and next year now.

Nick Murphy had a solid game again as did Andrew Horne.

Jacob Cate and Brad Crabb did well defensively too but we all need to understand that too many cameo performances won’t cut it at this level.

We just have to work hard over the summer to get our entire group contributing strongly for longer parts of matches.

There have been many positive signs and the players have tried I have no doubt, but poor efficiency will always be the main reason teams don’t succeed.

Improving our efficiency with the current players and getting a little more quality in to the team are our immediate aims.

I would like to finish by congratulating Ben Warren on a terrific career at the club and thank him for his efforts as club captain this season.

It was a tough year to be captain and I felt Ben did a particularly good job with the resources he had available.

I would like to wish him all the best in his retirement.

Reserves Match Report:

For the second week in a row South Adelaide’s Reserves ran over the top of their opposition to record a six point win over West Adelaide. Yet again the Panthers trailed for most of the day before a five goal final term got them home.

The effort was there for the first three quarters but some lapses in concentration saw the young team turn the ball over at vital stages and concede easy goals.

On-baller Tarak Redigolo was in the thick of it from the first bounce right until the final siren managing three goals to go with his 27 possessions and 9 effective tackles. Tarak’s in an under work was supported by the umpires with him receiving 10 frees for the day.

Tommy Johnson provided a real target up forward clunking 8 marks and kicking 6 goals. There were other strong performances from Lee Schmidt with 3 goals, Neil Reeve at centre half forward and Keegan Brooksby in the ruck.

Emmanuel Irra and Luke Caruso were the latest underage players to make their senior debut and handled the step up comfortably.

Finally, Tom Caudle announced to the playing group on Friday night that he would not be returning to the Panthers in 2011. Tom has been a terrific servant of the South Adelaide Football Club and his final game again underlined his commitment to getting the best out of himself.

Under 18 Report

The Panther U18’s have been heavily defeated by West Adelaide at Hickinbotham Oval on Saturday morning. In what was the final game of the 2010 season the Panthers were beaten in most facets of the game but did manage to win the last quarter. Best player for the day was Zachary Cameron who provided much drive around the stoppages.  He was well supported by defender Josh Coppin and Ryan Mahony who returned to the side following his college football commitments.
